Ayurveda is a traditional, natural system of medicine with roots in India, practiced for more than 5,000 years and is thought to be one of the oldest forms of healing systems. It is truly time tested and unique with the following principles:

  • Emphasis on preventive care and determining the root cause of imbalances

  • Holistic approach to health on 3 levels: Physical, Mental, Spiritual

The Sanskrit word “ayur” means life and “veda” means science, so Ayurveda literally means “the science of life,” which alludes to that Ayurveda is much more than a system of medicine, it is a lifestyle. A lifestyle that emphasizes health promotion and prevention, as well as addresses imbalances often referred to as dis-ease. When the common person thinks about health or well-being, usually they refer to how they are feeling physically, but as many of us probably experienced more than ever this past year, that mental and spiritual health are equally if not more important. Whenever there is an imbalance in any of these 3, that is when we experience imbalance or dis-ease.

Ayurveda gives much importance to strengthening the body, mind, and spirit. If the mind is disturbed the body will be disturbed and vice versa. With modern science, we also see that stress can wreak havoc on our immune system and burn out our Psycho- Neuro- Endocrino- Immunology or PNEI access. Our state of mind and emotions influence biochemical states within our body, and there are many molecules in the body which secretions are influenced by these. It is really profound how our emotions set the background for creating conditions that are conducive to either health or imbalances. One powerful thing that we can do to influence our mind is to just observe a good diet and lifestyle, which are primary components suggested during an Ayurveda Consultation.

Remembering to nourish our spirit is often forgotten because we cannot physically see it. Spirit is that which gives us a feeling of livelihood separate from material happiness. We spend our lives chasing materials pleasures, trying to satisfy the desires of our senses, but we see that even those who have access to all the food they can eat, nice houses and cars with air conditioning, and even those with lots of wealth or fame, can find themselves not content, always wanting something more and more to reach that state of contentment or happiness. Ironically, it is rather those individuals that find and know their purpose in life that are the most happy and content. This is because our spirit is what drives us and moves us forward.

As we age or are faced with obstacles in the form of physical ailments in which we just can’t seem to make our external environment comfortable enough, or we face circumstances in our life which present emotional turbulence that we have a hard time overcoming, that is usually at the point when we realize that relying solely on the health of our body and mind for our happiness is not sustainable. True happiness comes when we are deeply relaxed without wanting anything. Our external environment is always changing and brings stress to our body and mind, and we usually deal with that in different ways, some by oversleeping/undersleeping, overeating/undereating, watching excess TV, alcohol, smoking, taking it out on others verbally, etc. but these are ineffective and actually detrimental in the long term.

It is only when we are able to shift our focus more on making our inner space comfortable and into our inner spirit and are able to center ourselves in our deeper being we are able to overcome the stressors of the body and mind. This inherently means that in order to experience our spirit, we have to rise above our body and our mind.
